Obituary of Thomas Maloney

Thomas Parker Maloney, 76, of Jamestown, died Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his residence, following a long illness. Thomas was born on March 30, 1938 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to James Patrick Maloney and Kathleen Parker Maloney. He attended Austin High School in El Paso, TX., and was a graduate of Texas Western College in El Paso, TX. Thomas served in the United States Army Reserve from 1960 to 1966.He was a member of the Western Museum of Mining and Industry in Colorado Springs. Thomas worked at National Cash Register for four years, at the U. S. Civil Service for 25 years. In recent years he was an entrepreneur and builder and is the principal owner of the Golden Age Mine outside Jamestown. Thomas arrived in Boulder in 1969 and began his search for Gold. Upon arrival he discovered Jamestown and the surrounding area and has been a resident and permanent fixture ever since. He dabbled in mining, mining history, and the history of Jamestown from the 1860's until today. Travel was another one of his favorite things. Thomas had traveled around the world twice; however, his favorite place to travel was Mexico and had been for 60 years. When he was 18, he traveled thru Mexico by motorcycle to Guatemala and back to Texas. While in Mexico he met Pancho Villa's wife, Luz Corral. He swam with turtles at the Galapagos Islands and saw the whales and loons in Baja California. While wintering in Mexico in January 1994, he met Colleen Ann Ostlund of Boulder and said of her, "the love of my life"; they met in San Miguel De Allende. One of Thomas's hobbies was building log cabins. He did so for many years around Jamestown, and he built two houses in Jamestown which survived the recent flooding. As the Jamestown historian, Thomas would greet all new arrivals in the Jamestown Mercantile or at his home. Everyone would get a tour and history lesson. Often Jamestown residents would bring their guests for a tour and receive a bit of mining lore; children would often receive a Buffalo nickel. Thomas wanted everyone to know the Native People were in Jamestown first In recent years, the tour included a sasaparilla in the Elk Horn Palace and you would often see him and Colleen sitting on the porch enjoying the stream. Thomas's gentleman ways and his sense of humor will be missed by his family, friends, and the community of Jamestown. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, James and Kathleen Maloney, sister, Patricia Rounds. He is survived by: his partner, Colleen Ann Ostlund; son, Toby Parker Maloney, Brooklyn, NY; brother, James Parker Maloney, El Paso, TX and several nieces and nephews.
