Obituary of Daniel Borowsky

Dan Borowsky died peacefully Sunday February 3 in the arms of his son and daughter. He was born January 16, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Joseph and Bertha Borowsky. A Celebration of Dan's Life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Fri., Feb. 15th, Congregational Har HaShem, 3950 Baseline Rd., Boulder, CO. A reception will follow at the temple. Dan Borowsky grew up on the rough streets of South Philadelphia, attending Central High School before moving with his family to Atlantic City. Dan worked at his father's restaurant Joe's, as well as attending Drexel University, before joining the Army. Assigned to work in Pisa, Italy, in 1953, during the Korean War, he treasured the memories of living in Europe, and loved to tell stories about those days. Returning from his service in 1955, Dan again worked at the family restaurant in Atlantic City till his friend Fred Wessel tried to persuade him that they should drive down to Florida and attend the University of Miami together. After much convincing, the pair drove down in Dan's new Pontiac, a gift from his father that meant the world to him. Dan graduated from U of M in 1959; while in south Florida he met, and in 1959 married, Adele Pearis, of Binghampton, NY; they separated in 2012. Dan received his Master's degree in Special Education from Florida Atlantic University in 1964. Their first child, Bruce, was born in 1961 during a blizzard in Atlantic City; shortly afterwards, the new family settled in North Miami Beach, Florida. Jodi was born in 1965, and the family settled in Skylake. Dan taught in the Dade County Public Schools for 30 years. In addition, Dan co-founded Broward Prep School in Hollywood, FL, which offered private tutoring after-school, and turned Bruce into quite a voracious speed-reader. In 1992, Dan retired from N. Miami Beach to Boulder, where his two children lived. Dan truly enjoyed life, and delighted in looking at the blown-up photographs on the walls of his apartment containing images of his children, his friends, his parents, and his grandchildren. He was a natural jokester, and took great joy in making people laugh; he loved sharing stories of the old days on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, his exciting trip to Cuba in 1957, and his adventures while living in Italy. Let it be known that he was actually making jokes literally right up to the very end as he lay with his kids. Dan is survived by his son Bruce Borowsky (Jenny Doyle) and daughter Jodi Sheinberg (Peter Sheinberg), grandchildren Michael, Josh, Sophie, and Noah, all of Boulder County, and nephew Dr. Robert Fine of Tenafly, NJ. Rather than sending flowers, Dan's kids ask instead that you take a moment to laugh and smile, and be thankful for all the happiness in your life. Please share thoughts, memories and condolences at legacy.com/obituaries/dailycamera.
