Obituary of William Fligg

William Lewis Fligg, Sr. (Bill) joined his beloved wife and best friend of 56 years, Marjorie Ellen Dreher (Marge), when he passed away at the age of 84 on February 3, 2021, at Juniper Village, Louisville, CO. Born on April 29, 1936, to Hollis Martin Fligg, Sr. and Florence L. Fligg (Loye) in Billerica, MA. Bill spent his first 12 years of life in Billerica, MA, where he attended Thomas Ditson Elementary School. After his family moved to Southern California in 1948, he attended San Fernando Junior and Senior High Schools. Bill and Marge met at the ages of 14 and 16 and had their first date at the Van Nuys Drive-In Theater followed by burgers and fries at Bob’s Big Boy. Two years later, Bill and Marge began their adventure by eloping in Las Vegas, NV on September 21, 1954, when Marge became Mrs. William Fligg. Two years later, they began their family with a daughter, Dayna, and soon after, a son, William, and then another daughter, Tyra. Marge passed away at the age of 69 on January 8, 2008, at Balfour Retirement Community, Louisville, CO. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Chatsworth Rotary Club in the early 1970s, Bill was nominated by community organizations and churches in Chatsworth and by the Chatsworth Jaycees for the Distinguished Service Award. Bill was recognized for implementing the Chatsworth Fire Disaster Center, team coach and sponsorship at Chatsworth Junior Baseball League, sustaining memberships for the Mid-Valley and West Valley YMCAs, as well as participating on the Board of Directors for Tri-County, Chatsworth Junior Baseball League and the Chatsworth Chamber of Commerce. Bill embodied the motto, “Service above Self,” by helping others and volunteering for organizations such as the Chatsworth Junior Baseball League, Red Cross and, most recently, Meals on Wheels. Bill enjoyed his many hobbies: An ardent bowler, in his last competition, Bill placed first in his age group in the State of Colorado, a huge baseball (Dodgers) fan, time outdoors gardening and landscaping, carpentry, woodworking and leather crafting, along with target shooting and 1950s muscle cars. A self-made man, Bill began working one summer as a tile layer for a neighbor’s business at the ripe old age of 10. The following summer, Bill worked for a nearby carpenter sheeting roofs. By the age of 16 with numerous years of (hard) work experience under his belt, Bill began his career in the dairy business; before the age of 35, Bill would own 7 dairies throughout the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. After retiring from the dairy business, Bill worked as Senior Vice President of Transportation and Distribution for Sugar Foods Corporation (Sweet-n-Low) located in Sun Valley, CA from 1984-2001. Following his retirement in 2001, he and Marge moved from West Hills, CA to Boulder, CO to be closer to their family. Bill and Marge enjoyed attending school and sporting events with their children and grandchildren; their move to Colorado allowed them to share in these special and important times, which resulted in very close, treasured, family connections and many cherished memories. In addition to his loving wife, Marge, Bill is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Hollis M. Fligg, Jr. and John (Jack) H. Fligg, niece Valerie Henderson Fligg and granddaughter Jennifer A. Fligg. He is survived by his sisters Carole Lyons (Las Vegas, NV) and Cathy Ashmore (Evanston, WY.), daughter Dayna Good and her husband, Bert (Erie, CO), son William L. Fligg, Jr. and his wife, Donna(Erie, CO), Donna’s mother Valerie Delmastro (Lafayette, CO) , daughter Tyra Campion (Denver, CO), and sister-in-law Trudy Willauer (Agoura Hills, CA). Bill is also survived by grandchildren Ever Good (Denver, CO), Tom Fligg and his wife Alexandra (Erie, CO), James Budnick (Lafayette, CO), Madison Budnick (Denver, CO) and three great grandchildren, Cali, Laney and Nicholas. A memorial service will be planned for a later date at Longmont’s LifeBridge Christian Church, where Bill was a member. Burial will occur at Oakwood Memorial Park and Cemetery (22601 Lassen Street, Chatsworth, CA). In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Bill’s name to Longmont Meals on Wheels, 910 Longs Peak Ave., Longmont, CO 80501, 303-772-0540 (https://www.longmontmeals.org/give, or by planting a tree in his memory.
