Richard was a sweet and kind man, who was a wonderful and loyal friend to our mother, Rebekka Struik. Mom and he were friends through many decades of teaching at the university, and through more decades of shared interest such as their potlucks and sketching parties. I remember visiting him at his house near the university with mom. And after he moved to Frasier Meadows, there were movie nights and many dinners with their group of friends in the dining room. After he was more disabled, mom and I used to visit him at his apartment. Even after he was in a wheelchair, he came and visited mom when she was in the hospital a few years ago. What a kind and loyal man! His devoted caretakers, Bené and his family, created such a warm and supportive environment for Richard during these last years. They reflected Richard's kindness back on him, and he reflected their kindness back on them.
