Obituary of Scott I. Kavanaugh

Scott Ira Kavanaugh, PhD, of Westminster died Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the Denver Hospice Care Center after an 18-month battle with gastroesophageal cancer. He was born in North Tonawanda, NY on January 19, 1969, but grew up in rural Maine. From a very young age, he developed a tremendous work ethic, and throughout his life, he never undertook a pursuit that did not receive his meticulous attention and full dedication. His careers and passions were varied, including the culinary arts, scientific research, teaching, gardening, and zymurgy. As a young adult, he rose from dishwasher to executive chef running two fine dining restaurants. At age 30, he went back to school, and ten years later, he received his PhD in biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire. Scott will be remembered for his generosity, strength, love of family, mentoring abilities, tomatoes, whoopie pies, bacon, biscuits, and homebrew.

He is preceded in death by his father, Earl Kavanaugh, and survived by his mother, Dorothy Mowatt; his sister, Dawn Kavanaugh; his nephew, Bodie Gaudette; his partner, Faye Doherty; and the countless friends that consider themselves blessed to have known him.

A gathering to celebrate Scott's life will be held on Sunday, August 26, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Gunbarrel Brewing, 7088 Winchester Circle, Boulder, CO 80301.
