Diane,
My sympathies on your loss. I remember you fondly though we met only a couple of times while Bill and I were working in the field. He was one of the "good ones". As a newer Survey geologist I learned from him and enjoyed his counsel and company. He was willing to listen to my thoughts and geophysical interpretations, and I profited greatly from his knowledge as a structural geologist. I'm sure he walks the hills of another wilderness now with hammer in hand and mind busy with questions to which he will find the answers.
Best Regards,
Dolores

Diane and family,
I got to know Bill pretty well as a USGS colleague and friend. However, I was unaware of his musical talents and his interest in bluegrass and country music. Bill and I traded places in the USGS about 1982; he moved to Denver and I moved to Reston. We spent some time together in the field, particularly, on a 7- to 10-day reconnaissance trip through SW Montana in the early 1980s. Bill was very well educated and was an excellent structural geologist. His expertise was thin-skinned tectonics of both the Appalachian and Cordilleran mountain chains. In addition, he unselfishly contributed to many oil/gas assessments by the USGS. Bill was a real gentleman and scholar.

I will always remember those rare but delightful camping trips we took with Uncle Bill Aunt Di and the cousins when everyone was still back east, and the wonderful advice on places to see as we headed west from Boulder back in 2014. I always think of him when I pass the exposed layers of hillside on the turnpike, and how he wished he could stop and get a closer look if the turnpike staff would have lightened up a bit! Will miss his gentle humor and that twinkle in his eyes. So glad everyone gathered to sing him on his way— wish I could have been with you.

I met Bill (then known to me as 'Mr. Perry') almost 35 years ago, as the father of my two best friends. I'll never forget the day when he nodded sagely at me and said, "Chris, I knew that *some* of your family must have come from Virginia." I'm not sure what I did to earn this honor, other than to have a great-grandmother from Virginia. Coming from Bill, to be considered even a vicarious Virginian was the highest possible praise.

I had the privilege of working with Bill on USGS projects in Nevada and Alaska. He was a very accomplished structural geologist and a wonderful guy. A very kind man. I'm sorry he is gone. Peace to his family.
