Obituary of Anthony Lozano

CU Professor Emeritus Anthony G. Lozano passed away peacefully after a difficult battle against cancer at his home full of his loved ones in Boulder, Colorado. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, April 8 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 1317 Mapleton Ave Boulder, CO. A reception will be held at the family’s house following the mass. Born to Victoria G. and Antonio A. Lozano, he was part of one of the founding families of San Antonio, TX. He was the first person in his family to graduate from college and earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics from University of Texas. He served in the military as a Captain in the Army at the prestigious Defense Language Institute, in Monterrey, California. He began his long career in academia as an assistant professor at Cornell University. He met his beloved wife of 46 years when they were both professors at a NEA summer language institute in Greenville, North Carolina and together they made their passion for Spanish and education their life project. In 1972 they made Boulder their home when he became a professor at CU. He was an accomplished scholar in the field of Spanish linguistics; he was also a mentor to many students, in particular Chicano students and the Mexican immigrant community of Colorado. As a professor over the course of 30 years at CU, he was recognized for his leadership in diversity issues and work with multicultural students and faculty. He encouraged students at all levels to complete their education, and helped them to reach educational goals that they thought were beyond their own reach. Following his retirement, he volunteered on the Special Transit Board and served on the Plain Language Jury Instruction Committee for the Colorado Supreme Court. In the last week of his life, the Court recognized him for his significant contribution to the legal language of the state of Colorado. He enjoyed helping his daughter and nieces to edit their academic work and could always be counted on to give his thoughtful advice. He was a wonderful father to his daughter, his son-in-law, his nephews and nieces; a protective older brother and a playful grandfather. He liked to ride bikes, ice skate with his granddaughter, travel the world, drink afternoon coffees, go to the theater and movies, and to visit with his loved ones near and far. He is survived by his beloved wife Leticia Alonso de Lozano; his adored daughter Angélica Lozano-Alonso, son-in-law Anthony P. Tiberia and his grandchildren Ana Sofia, and Sebastian of Greenville, SC; and his sister Elizabeth Lozano of Boulder, Colorado. He is also survived by his wife’s siblings in Mexico for whom he was a brother, and his 3 nephews and 7 nieces all of whom lived with him for a school year.
