I was watching "CBS Sunday Morning" just now. As always, the moment I heard Abblasen play I thought of Joe Domko, the dragon of Deer Creek, and I smiled. It was at his insistence that I watched it for the first time. I remember being really annoyed - I had no desire to watch NEWS! on a Sunday morning. He really earned his reputation as being a "hard" teacher.
That was back when Charles Kuralt was hosting the show, and it was a really good one that week. I was hooked, not on news shows but on information. Mr. D was the one who taught me to question things. Do not settle for the easy answer - go out and discover for yourself. I loved debating him in class because he'd never give me an answer. Instead he'd keep questioning my assumptions until I arrived at a conclusion myself. I've lost a lot of sleep because of this man, and I couldn't be more grateful. Thank you Mr. D - you gave me the greatest gift any educator could bestow. It was my very good fortune to know you, if only for a short time. Rest in Peace.

Mr. Domko was a great teacher, and I enjoyed his class at Deer Creek. He made learning enjoyable, and I'll never forget how he teased me for reading Gone with the Wind. He checked on me each day to see how far I'd made it in the novel the night before. I'd never had a teacher joke with me like that, but he made me feel special that he noticed me.

Mr. Domko was one of the most impactful teachers I had. Though he could be a bit intimidating (to me anyway), there was something about him that made me want to excel. He had a healthy expectation that made struggling junior high kids believe in themselves just a little bit more. Definitely "old school" in the best way. My condolences to his family and friends.

Joe Domko made a lifelong lasting impression on my 3 older brothers and I. He taught us to think and to wrestle and then do both at the same time. Rarely a day goes by that we don't benefit from the guidance he shared with us. Coach Domko had huge heart!

Mr. Domko was a wonderful teacher and lovely man. At a difficult time in my life when I felt woefully out of place, he made me excited to learn, and taught me important life-long lessons about self-discipline. He was able to make me feel like I could accomplish anything if I truly worked hard, while also teaching me that the hard work was the important part, and the thing most worthy of respect. He was an important person in my childhood, and a wonderful role model. I'm so sad to hear of his passing, and wish peace, healing and love to his family. I'm lucky to have been his student, and I know I'm a better person for it.

This world has lost a lot of light and a wonderful presence. We are praying for your peace and comfort in the days ahead. With love and prayers, Leslie and John Gould

Dear Jo Anne, Joey, & Annie,
My heartfelt condolences come to you on the passing of Joe. My 41 year journey with Joe was one that I will cherish for the remainder of my life on this earth. It was my honor to know Joe as a friend, fellow educator, soldier, husband to you, Jo Anne, father to you, Joey and Annie, and most of all, as a child of God.
Joe had a way of inspiring all who came into his life to want to become better people. His kindness and genuine caring for his students, his family, and his contemporaries is how I will always remember Joe.
I will speak to a thought that is in the forefront of my mind: the footprints that have been left behind by Joe are ones that we should all strive to follow and walk in. For he established a path throughout his short time on this earth that is, without doubt, one of greatness, love, and genuine respect for all.
All of my love and prayers are with you at this time. I am a much better person for having known Joe.

Coach Domko is such a wonderful person. He was a great influence during my junior high years at Deer Creek (1983-85). He asked me to be a matt maid for the wrestling team and that changed every life experience that followed. I never forgot him.
My most heartfelt condolence-
I wish his family only the very best.

I remember Joe from teaching with him in the early years of Columbine High. He got me interested in pioneer American history, recommending the biography of Sacajawea and other explorers. It was a pleasure to talk with him as a colleague, and even thought it's
been years, I remember him as a very kind man who enjoyed life.
My deepest condolences to his family.

Mr. Domko was a strong source of inspiration, curiosity, and knowledge. He was my AP US & European History teacher at Standley Lake 2002-2004. To this day, I still remember random things he said, advice he gave to us, and how whenever he drove home after a stressful day, he'd look to the mountains and he'd be there.
I will never forget how kind he was and how he taught us that there is so much more to learn and so many challenges to accept with open arms in order to move forward to a brighter future.
Sending my best to all of the family, friends, and students.

Mr. Domko was my 9th grade Social Studies teacher at Columbine. He was fun and playful but he made us think and question.I remember a particular lesson Mr. Domko taught. He had us pair off and half of us were blindfolded. Those of us who were blindfolded were walked out into a field near the school. He asked us to feel the ground, smell the air then describe it. I thought it was a wonderful experiment in what we take for granted each day. Every day he had a different, thoughtful and inspiring quote on his chalkboard and he played Bobby Vinton albums in class. I worked in the attendance office my freshman year and Mr. Domko would take roll then send the absentee list, along with some fictitious names, to the office. I looked for Seymore Butts forever and how I laughed after figuring it out!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sorry for our loss as well. He was a great teacher and I'll always remember him fondly.
Sincerely,
Nina Seifert Bishop (FB)
